Atherosclerosis is a common condition that is generally associated with hardening of the arteries. Atherosclerosis occurs when fat, cholesterol, and other substances collect and build up in the walls of the arteries, then thicken, and eventually harden by forming hard structure deposits called plaques.

When a person develops Atherosclerosis, the built-up and hardened plaque deposits make the artery less flexible and restrict blood flow through them. The plaque build up can reach a point in which it eventually blocks the arteries completely. The blockage of any artery can cause organ malfunction. Several causes have been identified including:

• High blood pressure
• Diabetes
• High levels of cholesterol in the blood

Warning Signs and Symptoms of Atherosclerosis

Atherosclerosis of moderate to severe levels will show symptoms that vary depending on the arteries that have been affected; atherosclerosis in the heart arteries can be signaled through chest pain, atherosclerosis in the brain arteries may be signaled through slurred speech and drooping of facial muscles, atherosclerosis in the arms’ and legs’ arteries can show through pain in the legs especially when walking [1].
