Chondroitin is a substance found in human and animal cartilage. Chondroitin is the most abundant type of glycosaminoglycan (GAG) found in cartilage. Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) are complex carbohydrates that are found in the various types of connective tissue in the body. Chondroitin occurs in connective tissue as a sulfate.

Chondroitin is commonly used in conjunction with another dietary supplement called glucosamine to help treat joint pain caused by osteoarthritis and to help counter cartilage loss in older adults. It has also been used to treat animals for arthritis. These different applications are derived from different properties of chondroitin. Chondroitin has been studied in humans for more than 30 years as a treatment for psoriasis, cancer, and arthritis.

Chondroitin Benefits

Chondroitin helps reduce problems in joints, particularly in the hip and knee areas that result from injuries and aging conditions such as osteoarthritis.  It is supposed to reduce swelling and pain, improve the function and mobility of the joints, and it is claimed that these results can be seen up to three months after the supplement use is discontinued by the individual. Chondroitin has also been said to help with bladder conditions such as interstitial cystitis and provide assistance for those with an overactive bladder. ^[1] There is also evidence, though not backed with solid studies, that Chondroitin is effective in such conditions as Alzheimer's and heart disease, preterm labor and osteoporosis.

Chondroitin Dosage

Since Chondroitin may not be found in our regular food supply, supplements become inevitable with a recommended intake of 400 milligrams taken three times a day or 600 milligrams taken twice a day for adults. Chondroitin supplements are not recommended for use in children because no pediatric studies have proven the extent to which children can use these supplements. ^[1] As a consumer you are advised to take care when using supplement products containing manganese, keep the daily intake of manganese to no more than 11 milligrams.

Side Effects of Chondroitin

Side effects, while taking the supplement, may include mild digestive disturbances. Because of lack of research data, it is suggested that pregnant, lactating women or children not use chondroitin as a supplement. In addition, anyone taking blood thinners or individuals with hemophilia should not take the supplement at all until they first consult with a health professional. While nothing has been reported with respect to allergic side effects, you should stop taking chondroitin if you experience any of the following problems:

• Shortness of breath; or
• Breakouts, such as hives or rash.
