There are many possible health conditions associated with the eyes and vision, most of which occur due to the normal aging process. As people age, they develop a higher risk of age-related eye diseases and conditions such as: age-related macular degeneration, cataract, diabetic eye disease, glaucoma, low vision and dry eye. Macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in the U.S.

Macular degeneration, or age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of vision loss in Americans 60 and older. It is a condition that attacks the central vision function of the eyes. Central vision is necessary to see objects clearly and to do tasks such as reading and driving.

AMD affects the macula, which is the part of the eye that allows fine detail. Macular degeneration causes cells in the macula to die. The rate of progression varies, as it advances very slowly in some cases, and very rapidly in others. It may lead to a loss of vision in both eyes. Regular comprehensive eye exams are recommended, as they can detect macular degeneration before the disease causes loss of vision. Medical treatment can slow vision loss. How Can Resveratrol Support Eye Health?

Researchers from the Washington University School of Medicine may have discovered new implications in the use of resveratrol to support eye health. According to their findinds, published in The American Journal of Pathology, resveratrol supplementation may help three major eye conditions: age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinopathy of prematurity. The researchers found in animal experiments that the anti-inflammatory and anti-clotting properties of resveratrol counteracted the formation of abnormal blood vessels in the retina after laser treatment.[2]
