Memory loss may be short-term (transient) or long-term. Different areas of the brain help  create and retrieve distinct types of memories. Damage or malfunction of any of these areas in the brain can lead to memory loss. Memory loss may involve only memory of recent or new events, past events, or both. Memory loss may be for words and thoughts only, while the loss of motor memory may cause the body to no longer be able to perform specific movements or actions.[1]

Causes of Memory Loss

Many things can cause serious memory problems, such as blood clots, depression, and Alzheimer’s disease. Certain medical conditions such as a bad reaction to medicines, depression, vitamin deficiency, alcoholism, head injury, and brain tumors and blood clots can cause serious memory problems, some of which may go away with treatment. Some emotional problems in older people may also cause serious memory problems. [2]
